21st October 2010
An editorial photographer is a freelance photographer or employed with an organization who works with newspapers, magazines, and book authors to provide the necessary picture for the story that is being published. This is not like the commercial photography where the photos are taken to promote any specific product or service. The editorial photographer does take pictures that will be relevant to the topic of discussion and will also highlight the important events that take place that is related to the story. If the editorial photographer is attached to a particular organization then he will be restricted to cover the other areas of his or her personal interest. Whereas a freelance editorial photographer will be hired for the specific project or period and will be allowed to commercial or fine art photography.
Newspapers and Magazines are the popular places for the editorial photographer to find a job. To help the readers get the grasp of the story or article that is being published, photographs are inserted to provide the necessary explanation or create emotion. As an editorial photographer one must have a complete understanding of the topic of article and also about the background surrounding that particular story that they are involved in. Editorial photographer must be able capture the photos in such a way that it captures the heart of the story and make the readers understand the meaning of it.
Mostly the editorial photographer will be given a smaller budget than a commercial photographer. Since companies spend more money on exhibiting and marketing their products through photographs and therefore needs lots of attention. So, they spend more money on this type of photography than the editorial ones. The editorial photos are only used as supplements and often seen as expenditure rather than an investment. So, it needs to be part of the budget of the entire article publishing cost and nothing more than will be allowed to spent.
