Black and white photography has a different lighting than color photography. Black and white will bring out contrasts in pictures. It focuses on texture, shadows, and also framing than color. These aspects should be emphasized on focusing the lighting. Black and white photography expresses a timeless and mysterious quality. This is the reason why it is favored by wedding photographers, artist, and even journalist.

Features

You can use a “golden hour” to make more dramatic black and white pictures. This is happened in an hour after sunrise and an hour before sunset. In golden hour, the sun is close to the horizon and the lights are long. It makes the light visible soft and the shadow is getting intense. This delivers contrasts between dark and light part of the pictures. These shadows that used creatively will bring out the illusion of strength and texture in black and white photography.

Function

The best lighting technique that used in black and white photography of wide shots is to use harsh light. It can be found outside in the middle of the day. This will make the color photography will be worst, but it does not work in black and white photography. It does wonderful things for black and white. When the sun is high, the shadows will be more intense. It can make the object jump out of black and white photographs. For example, a photograph of a forest with intensive shadows defines each tree and will make the photograph appear more three dimensional. You can also create this type of lighting indoors with shining bright key lights trough the subjects at an angle. It also can be done in color photography by removing the shadows.

Maternity Portraits, and Child Portrait Photography, and Family Portrait Photography—can be some of the most important pictures you ever take in your life. And it’s quite easy to see why.

Becoming married, having children, and having a family are often the most important aspects of a persons life. Memories of those precious moments are held dear all our lives, and are far from the memories we want to forget.

So we take pictures, photography allows us to capture the essence of memories we never want to lose. But there are many things you can do to make sure those memories are represented in your photography as well as they are represented in your mind.

Being pregnant is a joyful experience, that often times remind us of the glory of nature. Maternity portraits also capture expectant mothers in their most beautiful state. The first and most important thing you need to decide on for your important portrait is a theme—some photographers choose to go more artistic and will want to shoot you in black and white or very high contrast backgrounds. Others will try to take a stance that places an emphasis on the natural aspect of your pregnancy—these photos will often result in a much more calm and carefree themed maternity portrait.

The most important part is that you know what you want, and come to the photographer with that in mind; ready to explain your specific wants or needs, as to make sure your photographer does not hijack your own memories—and take your portrait into a direction you don’t agree on.

When being a photographer, there are so many different elements you have to take into consideration when doing your job.  The amount of techniques and tips that photographers have the joy of incorporating into their work is outstanding and is something that takes a lot of time and energy to accomplish.  Some photography techniques include photography lighting techniques, indoor lighting photography techniques, black and white photography techniques, and street photography techniques.  With regular photography lighting techniques, they can either be easy or difficult – it depends on what you are shooting.  Whether you are taking photos of a city at night or a strip of country land in the bright sunlight, you must understand the basics of lighting so your photos become pieces of art.

With indoor lighting photography techniques, it is important to try and use natural light that comes through windows, or light from candles and ceiling lights.  Many top wedding photographers tend to take pictures indoors because of the natural feel you get from the light sources.  Sometimes, however, there may not be enough natural light for your projects.  This is where you may need to incorporate big lights to flood your subject.  The great thing about indoor lighting is that fact that you can practice and experiment with it at any time.  It will become more natural the more you play around with it.

Black and white photography techniques are some of the nicest looking techniques you will ever see.  Despite what many people may think, you should take your photos in color and then use a program such as Adobe Photoshop to transform them into black and white.  This allows you to manipulate your photo in more ways than one.  Side lighting, in black and white photography, will create shadows, giving your subject a different perspective.  Using this technique on landscapes, people and buildings is ideal.  It is also great for weddings.  Contact your Houston wedding photographer today and ask about the techniques they are partial to.

Portrait Photography

09th September 2010

Anyone can take a portrait photograph, regardless of experience or training due to the often overwhelming advancements in digital photography and the many tools and accessories that come today’s digital cameras. Simply point and shoot, it’s really that easy. Not so long ago, if someone needed a photographic portrait, there were many more time and money intensive steps that one needed to take to create one. The rapid evolution of digital technology has made those steps obsolete and made portrait photography virtually painless.

While there are many different kinds of photography, portrait photography describes the process of capturing the image of a person or group of people, while generally focusing on their face and expressions. This is a key distinction, even though many portraits include the rest of the body and background images. The focus, however, is always on the subject’s face and facial expressions. There are many different kinds of portrait shots, too. A candid shot, one where the subject is not posed and often taken while they are not paying attention, is very different than a body shot which is very deliberately posed to instill a particular emotion or reaction from the photo. Portraits always have a specific point of view, and the photographer uses body language, the position of the gaze and various poses and backgrounds to bring their internal vision of the shot to life.

Portrait photography has been around nearly as long as photography itself. Even so, it was only a treat for the very rich, as it was a very expensive luxury to procure. Before photography, painters and artists spent huge amounts of time, carefully creating portraits of their affluent clients using oil paint, water colors, charcoal and even marble and other types of stone in sculptures. You might be able imagine how much time and thought went into these masterpieces. Even with the amount of time that went into completing early portraits, the artists were experts and while not easy, they produced their masterpieces in a reasonable amount of time.

Black and white photography is a number of monochrome forms in visual art. Monochrome comes from the Greek monochromos meaning ”of one colour”, which is a combination of monos, meaning ”alone” or ”solitary” and chroma meaning ”colour”.

Quite basic when you break it down!

For Many decades black and white photography dominated the scene until colour was introduced. From the 16th century when the brightness and clarity of camera obscuras was improved by enlarging the hole with a telescope lens until now, we still admire the purity of black and white photography. It was not until the 17thCentury, 1727 to be exact, when Professor J. Schulze mixed chalk, nitric acid, and silver in a flask, that the first photosensitive compound was created. And in 1816 Nicéphore Niépce combines the camera obscura with photosensitive paper and created a permanent image in 1826.

In the past black and white dominated the media. Movies, television and even computers, were all monochrome. It was not until the middle of the 20th century that colour photography became popular.

Choosing a subject is essential for this type of photography, more so than choosing a subject for colour photography. While some subjects can look amazing in colour, they often look dull in black and white. Black and white photography is both the simplest and most sophisticated of all the photography disciplines. It is, honest, fresh, crisp and clean and can result in the most powerful imagery. Capitalising on its popularity, black and white photography holds its own when it comes to photographic exhibitions. Such powerful imagery can be timeless and compelling at the same time. It captures emotions, impressions, and atmosphere that depict nostalgia in a dramatic way.
